What does this quote mean?

A tree can be a magnificent sight. Take, for example, the redwoods of Northern California, which have been around for hundreds of years and have the potential of being on earth for centuries still. A tree damaged by disease, nature or even more devastating, man's carelessness (forest fires), is, next to man, perhaps the most upsetting thing to see.
